CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - UNI Athletics has hired Joel Wauters as the assistant director of communications.
Wauters, a 2018 UNI graduate, joins the sports information department from Trinity International University.
"Joel's passion for UNI Athletics makes him a great fit for our team," said Michelle Van Dorn, UNI's assistant athletic director of communications. "He appreciates the tradition and knows the deep-rooted history of our programs. We are excited to welcome a Panther back home."
At TIU, he oversaw media relations and statistics for the university's eight varsity teams. He served as director of game operations, staffing games and setting up venues for home events.
Panther fans may recognize him as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Waterloo Bucks, where he filled in a couple of times during the summer of 2021.
Wauters joined the TIU athletic department in August of 2019. As the department's sports information director, Wauters was responsible for providing live stats, producing media content on both a written and digital level, maintaining the athletic department's website and maintaining the records of TIU's teams.
Prior to arriving at Trinity, Wauters worked as the director of media relations for the Cedar Valley CourtKings, a semi-pro men's basketball team in the Midwest Basketball League based in Waterloo, Iowa from late 2017 through the 2019 season, where he oversaw all media operations for the organization that included pregame and postgame stories, website management, graphic design, and in-game promotions. Additionally, he also served as the team's interim play-by-play radio broadcaster during the 2018 season.
From December 2018 until August 2019, Wauters also worked as an in-studio producer and co-host for "On Press Row" with Gary Rima, the voice of UNI Panther football and men's basketball. The weekday sports talk radio show aired on News Talk 1540 in Waterloo and focused on sports in Iowa.
Wauters graduated from UNI in December 2018 with a bachelor's degree in digital media: journalism. While at UNI, Wauters was the sports editor of "The Northern Iowan," UNI's bi-weekly student produced newspaper.
Wauters also has a background in competitive swimming, having swam for 12 years before becoming a coach for the Black Hawk Area Swim Team and his hometown Dysart Swim Team in 2014.
A native of Elberon, Iowa, Joel currently resides in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
