No. 22 UNI wrestling at 2021 MatMen Open
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Three UNI wrestlers remain alive in the consolations of the 2021 Matmen Open.
Ethan Basile suffered his first loss in the evening session after opening the day with two sudden victory wins at 141 pounds. He held No. 24 Cole Matthews of Pittsburgh to a decision, but was bumped to the consolations after losing, 9-2. Basile will face We Rachal of Illinois in his first bout of the day tomorrow. Rachal made three dual starts as a true freshman for Illinois in 2020, but competed in just five extra matches last season as a sophomore.
At 133 pounds, Jack Wagner opened with a major decision win before taking No. 6 Micky Phillippi of Pittsburgh to a tiebreaker. Phillippi, a two-time ACC champion and three-time NCAA qualifier, edged out Wagner, 7-6. Wagner picked up two more wins to end the night, including a decision that ended teammate Jack Skudlarczyk's run at the tournament. Wagner will open with No. 12 Sammy Alvarez of Rutgers, who was a 2020 NCAA qualifier as a true freshman. He was ranked as high as No. 5 last season as a sophomore.
After opening with a loss to Lehigh's Carter Bailey, Julian Farber responded with a 20-3 tech fall in 4 minutes, 50 seconds over UW-Parkside's Matthew Chi. He notched two more decisions to close out the day. Farber will open tomorrow with a bout against Cole Rhone of Bloomsburg. Rhone transferred from Virginia Tech.
The Matmen Open replaced the annual Midlands Championships, which originally was planned in the same arena on the same dates. The event is open to fans looking to buy tickets.
UNI wrestling was scheduled to compete at the Hawkeye Open Jan. 2. The event has since been canceled.
