
UNI wrestling to face Hofstra for fifth place at Collegiate Duals

NICEVILLE, Fla. – UNI wrestling dropped two duals to No. 2 Penn State and No. 11 Cornell to face Hofstra for fifth at the 2021 Collegiate Duals 1 p.m. CT TuesdayÂ
Austin Yant opened his dual season at 165 pounds at the tournament with a loss to Julian Ramirez of Cornell and win over No. 26 Creighton Edsell of Penn State.
Ramirez grabbed the first takedown to go up 2-0 midway through the first period over Austin Yant at 165. Yant escaped and continued to trail 2-1 to start the second period. Yant gave up a reversal but earned an escape to keep it tight at 4-2 to wrap up the second period. An escape off the third-period whistle put Yant in striking distance, trailing by just 1, 4-3. Yant was in on a takedown when time ran out, and he fell 4-3. Yant went on to beat Penn State's Edsell in a 4-1 decision.
Parker Keckeisen maintained his perfect match streak with a 6-2 decision over Cornell's Jonathan Loew.
Keckeisen was first to score in the 184-pound match with an escape off the second-period whistle. He notched his first offensive points with a takedown midway through the second. He cut Loew but kept the 3-1 lead through the second period. Keckeisen built up 1 minute, 25 seconds of riding time before cutting Loew again. Keckeisen notched a second takedown and went on to win 6-2.Â
However, reigning champion No. 1 Aaron Brooks of Penn State edged out Keckeisen, 4-3. Keckeisen's only career loss is to Brooks at last year's NCAA championships.Â
Brody Teske's perfect dual record ended with a loss to Cornell's No. 5 Vitali Arujau (ranked at 133 pounds), but he grab a 2-0 decision over Penn State's Jake Campbell at 125 pounds.Â
UNI's No. 27 Cael Happel was the only Panther to notch bonus points on the day with a 14-6 major decision over Cornell's Cole Handlovic at 141 pounds. Happel was first to score on Handlovic. The takedown put him up late in the first period. Handlovic escaped to make the score 2-1 to start the second period. Happel started down and escaped just 15 seconds into the second and went right into a low double attack to increase his lead, 5-1. Midway through the second period, Happel cut Handlovic to respond with another takedown to go up 7-2 and repeated with a cut and takedown to go up 9-3 and build up more than a minute riding time. Handlovic was rewarded a penalty point to end the second and an escape off the start in the third to close the scoring gap, 9-5. Happel continued to cut and release and earn a riding point to earn a 14-6 major decision.
Derek Holschlag earned his first dual win of the season at 157 pounds, beating Tony Negron of Penn State, 5-2.Â
