Panther volleyball sweeps Bears

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI Panther volleyball team defeated the Missouri State Bears in straight sets Saturday in the McLeod Center with scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-18. Inga Rotto registered the 300th block of her career, and fellow middle Carly Spies picked up her 200th block as a Panther.
UNI hit .242 with 40 kills compared to 17 errors including only eight unforced attack errors and limited Missouri State to 26 kills on a .040 percentage. The Panthers tallied all eight service aces in the sweep and led in digs, 48 to 36. Both teams totaled nine blocks.
Kira Fallert paced all performers with three aces and tied with Emily Holterhaus and Inga Rotto at a team-high eight kills apiece. Tayler Alden posted a match-best 20 assists with Jenna Brandt adding 17 assists. Payton Ahrenstorff had a contest-high 15 digs, and Carly Spies topped UNI with four rejections.
Set 1: UNI pushed its early advantage to six points before Missouri State closed the gap to 18-16. A Tayler Alden kill got the Panthers back on track, and Kira Fallert's two aces – including a service winner on set point – highlighted the rest of the 7-0 closing run within the 25-16 wire-to-wire victory.
Set 2: The Panthers rallied from behind for their first lead at 9-8 with consecutive kills by Inga Rotto. When Missouri State surged in front, 11-10, the Panthers scored 11 of the next 13 points to build a comfortable cushion. Two late terminations by Kaylissa Arndorfer capped UNI's scoring in the 25-17 win.
Set 3: After the Bears went ahead by a 12-10 margin, the Panthers started another run that helped secure the sweep. Carly Spies teamed up with Olivia Tjernagel on a set-tying block and followed with a go-ahead kill. UNI stretched its lead to 17-12 and then cruised to its 25-18 triumph that ended the tilt.

In its final road trip of the regular season, UNI will play Friday at Indiana State and Saturday at Evansville. Both matches are slated to begin at 5 pm Central Standard Time.
