THE PANTHERS
• For two consecutive weeks, UNI football knocked off a top-10 team and the 42nd time since 1985 after defeating No. 3 Southern Illinois. The Panthers won at then-ranked No. 6 South Dakota State a week earlier. The two wins pushed UNI up to No. 13 in the Stats Perform rankings.
Â
• The Panthers have earned four Missouri Valley Football Conference Player of the Week honors in the month of October.
• Back-to-back top-10 wins pushed UNI football up in the rankings and earned the team the national FCS team honor from Stats Perform. UNI is coming off a 23-16 win over then-ranked No. 3 Southern Illinois. The Panthers overcame a 13-3 deficit, going ahead for the first time 20-16 on Theo Day's 10-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Fourtenbary late in the third quarter. Matthew Cook kicked three field goals, while defensive end Caden Houghtelling had a fumble recovery and interception.
Â
THE REDBIRDS
• Brock Spack (Purdue, 1983) is in his 13th season as the head coach at Illinois State (88-58). Spack guided the Redbirds to back-to-back shares of the MVFC title in 2014-15 and an appearance in the 2014 FCS Championship. He has led the ISU to eight playoff appearances overall and recently became the program's all-time wins leader.
Â
• Freshman running back Cole Mueller had a career day in Illinois State's road win over No.15 South Dakota and for his efforts, he was named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week by the league office. The weekly honor is the second of the season for a Redbird player and the first for Mueller in his ISU career. The Wentzville, Missouri, native ran for a career-high 178 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown to lead the Redbirds to the victory over the Coyotes. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry against the Coyotes and scored the game's lone offensive touchdown for ISU on a 69-yard run in the second quarter that put the Redbirds up 10-0.
Â
•The Redbirds have become accustomed to finding the end zone on the defensive side of the football in recent years, and they kept that streak alive at Eastern Illinois, thanks to an impressive pick six by Jarrell Jackson. The 95-yard interception return for a touchdown was the first of the season for the Redbirds and the first since Kenton Wilhoit's 26-yard pick six last spring at UNI. ISU has now scored a defensive touchdown in each of the last 13 seasons under the leadership of Brock Spack.
