Panther volleyball falls to Ramblers on Senior Night

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI Panther volleyball team was defeated by the Loyola Ramblers, 3-1, Saturday in the McLeod Center. Loyola won by set scores of 25-10, 28-26, 16-25, 25-17 while securing an outright Missouri Valley Conference regular season title. UNI, which honored Kat Barr and Jenna Brandt for Senior Night, finished at 12-19 overall and 7-11 within MVC play.
For the second time in as many nights, the Panthers led the opposition in the dig department at home with 62 digs produced compared to Loyola's total of 57 digs. UNI had 55 kills on .195 hitting and recorded 43 assists. The Panthers also notched four blocks and one service ace.
Carly Spies posted a match-high 13 kills and hit .667 for the evening. Emily Holterhaus also reached double digits with 12 terminations. Tayler Alden's 31 assists led all performers Saturday. Kira Fallert paced the Panthers with 15 digs. Payton Ahrenstorff added 13 digs and UNI's only ace. Inga Rotto tallied a team-best two blocks.
Set 1: The match began with Kat Barr making her first-ever start for Senior Night. Loyola then opened the contest on a 7-1 run. Inga Rotto's kill provided the only early resistance from UNI. The Ramblers cruised from there en route to a 25-10 victory.
Set 2: The Panthers claimed their first lead at 18-17 following an Inga Rotto termination. The Ramblers surged back ahead but were denied on their first set-point opportunities on kills by Emily Holterhaus and Olivia Tjernagel. On its fourth chance, Loyola served up an ace to complete the 28-26 win.
Set 3: UNI and Loyola ended up in seven ties through 14-14 before the Panthers went on a 7-0 outburst. Emily Holterhaus and Carly Spies started the spurt with kills prior to Payton Ahrenstorff's service ace. UNI continued to build its advantage and closed out a match-extending 25-16 triumph.
Set 4: Olivia Tjernagel's kill put UNI in front, 3-2, but Loyola quickly roared in front and led for the rest of the way. Kat Barr made the most of her last stint on the floor by recording two terminations within her first multi-kill outing as a Panther. Loyola came away with a 25-17 victory to end the four-setter.
