
Panther Soccer Wins in Overtime Over Illinois State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's soccer team had a strong showing on Alumni day against the Illinois State Redbirds, winning in overtime 2-1. The Panthers strong offensive presence in front of the net shined as they bounced back from a tough loss last weekend.
The Panthers had a strong start to the game with a near goal in the first minute when Lily Caso took a shot from the right side of the box that went just wide left of the goal. UNI had another near miss when Ashley Harrington made a header inside the box that also went wide left. Lauren Heinsch also had a strong opportunity in the 16th minute putting a shot on goal in the left corner that was saved by Redbirds goalkeeper Priya Gillan. The Panthers had another good chance off a corner kick in the 42nd minute that was saved in front by Gillan. Despite the multiple chances on goal the two teams ended the half tied 0-0.
In the second half the Panthers got off to a bang with a goal from Lauren Heinsch assisted by Ashley Harrington to bring the score to 1-0. Heinsch almost had another shot at a goal as she went in on goalkeeper Gillan on the right side of the box. Gillan was able to get the top of her hands on the shot to tip it out of bounds over the net. The Redbirds were able to find the goal in the 65th minute when Hailey Glover put in a lower left side goal from the right side of the box. In the 80th minute the Panthers had a chance with a free kick off a Redbirds handball. Ashley Harrington took the kick shooting on the left side but Gillan was able to make a diving save to keep the game tied. The Panthers had a second close chance off a corner kick shortly after the free kick when Lily Caso headed the ball just high of the goal. At the end of full time the Panthers and Redbirds were tied 1-1.
In overtime the Redbirds had the first shot on goal as goalkeeper Caitlin Richards was able to make a jumping save for the Panthers. But Lily Caso would end the game in overtime for UNI with the golden goal during the 93rd minute getting a shot in on the left side just past Gillan.
As a team the Panthers had 11 shots through 93 minutes with 4 shots landing on goal. The Panthers also made 9 corner kicks while only committing 3 fouls. Offensively Lily Caso led the way for UNI with 1 goal and 3 shots. She was closely followed by Lauren Heinsch who had 1 goal, 2 shots, and 2 shots on goal. Sophia Doty and Ashley Harrington also had multiple shot games with 2 shots a piece. Goalkeeper Caitlin Richards made 2 saves in 93 minutes and allowed 1 goal in the second half.
