CEDAR FALLS - The University of Northern Iowa Swim and Dive team returns to the Glen F. Henry Pool to host Valparaiso for Senior Day on Friday, October 29. The recognition ceremony begins at 3:45 pm with the meet to follow at 4:00 p.m. The Panthers four seniors are Caitlin Dassow, Lauren Havertape, Rachelle Houlette, and Courtney Schaeffer.Â
Dassow finaled in the 200 butterfly at the MVC Championships last year in Carbondale after joining the team as a junior. Havertape ranks fourth all-time in the 100 breaststroke and earned First-Team All-MVC honors in 2019. A two-time Scholar-Athlete team selection and team captain, Houlette scored in the 500 freestyle at the MVC Championships last year as part of finaling each of the previous season. Swimming primarily sprint freestyle, Schaeffer is a team captain and represents the team to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.Â
Senior Day for the Panthers follows a road loss against Indiana State on Friday. Despite three consecutive touch-outs by a combined 0.36 early on, the Panthers continued to fight towards achieving 27 season-best times and five event wins.Â
"We feel like we are getting better every time," Head Coach Nick Lakin said. "This team is very resilient when things aren't going our way and we are really happy to see that."Â
Freshman Hallory Domnick picked up another win against the Sycamores, this time in the 500 freestyle. Her time of 5:08.86 ranks seventh in the MVC. Sophomore Amber Finke continues her run of wins in the 200 backstroke and ranks third in the MVC after a season best swim.Â
Freshman Faith Larsen continues to make waves, securing her third consecutive victory in the 50 freestyle against Indiana State. She continues to rank among the best in the MVC in the sprint freestyle events.
On the boards, Taylor Hogan picked up her first win of the season at Indiana State. Both Hogan and freshman Abby Hutchins continue to rank in the top-ten in the MVC on both 1-meter and 3-meter.Â
"We are in a good spot ahead of Valpo this week," Lakin said. "We are doing some events that aren't typically offered in a normal dual meet schedule and are especially excited for some of our freshmen to get a chance in those."Â
The Panthers enter Friday's dual meet with a 1-2 record, while the Beacons hold a 0-2 record following losses to Evansville and Eastern Illinois. Fans can follow along with the action on the Meet Mobile app.
