UNI Rallies for Five-Set Win Saturday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI Panther volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit Saturday and earned a 3-2 comeback victory against the Indiana State Sycamores in the McLeod Center. The set scores were 12-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, and 15-11.
UNI's defense owned a seven-to-five block advantage and also registered 58 total digs. Offensively, the Panthers generated 51 kills on a .153 attack percentage. Plus, UNI notched eight aces compared to just two service errors.
Carly Spies recorded match highs with a personal-best 15 kills and four blocks. Tayler Alden led all individuals by posting 28 assists along with 10 kills in a double-double while tying with Emily Holterhaus at a match-high three aces each. Payton Ahrenstorff had a career-best 18 digs to lead UNI's back row. Also, Kaylissa Arndorfer tallied seven kills on only 11 attacks and hit .545 in the victory.
Set 1: UNI quickly fell behind before coming into ties of 2-2 and 9-9. However, Indiana State pulled away on a 12-point go-ahead run and held off the Panthers for a 25-12 win to take the 1-0 edge in the match.
Set 2: The Panthers evened up the Sycamores several times early in the frame including at 7-7 on a successful challenge from Bobbi Petersen. Out of an 11-11 score, Kaylissa Arndorfer's kill opened a 4-0 spurt that put UNI ahead for good during a 25-20 victory which leveled the contest, 1-1.
Set 3: UNI and Indiana State were all square at many points within the set, and Payton Ahrenstorff broke one of those ties with a rare kill from the libero position for an 8-7 Panther advantage. The Sycamores later snapped a 15-15 tie with a 7-0 run en route to a 25-17 triumph that secured a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4: After several early deficits, the Panthers built a 20-15 lead featuring multiple Tayler Alden kills in a 6-1 tie-breaking outburst. A closing stretch with two Carly Spies terminations and service aces from Emily Holterhaus and Kaylee Donner finished a 25-20 win for a 2-2 tie within the tilt.
Set 5: Carly Spies and Kaylissa Arndorfer carried UNI in the decisive set. Their blocking and kills led to four of the six Panther points in a 6-2 opening run. When Indiana State closed the gap to 12-11, the same tandem provided back-to-back-to-back terminations to secure the 15-11 victory and the 3-2 triumph.

Four consecutive road matches await UNI beginning next week with a trip to Illinois State and Bradley. Friday's tilt between the Panthers and the Redbirds will begin at 6 pm in Normal, Illinois. Saturday's contest with the Braves will start at 5 pm in Peoria, Illinois.
