
UNI volleyball swept at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – The UNI Panther volleyball team was defeated in straight sets Friday by the Illinois State Redbirds at Redbird Arena in the opener of its road trip. Illinois State won by set scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-19.
UNI and Illinois State each tallied three service aces during the three-set match. The Panthers also had 34 kills on a .115 attack percentage while recording 37 digs and seven blocks featuring one solo rejection.
Emily Holterhaus topped UNI with nine terminations. Tayler Alden notched a team-high 16 assists. Jenna Brandt tied for a match high by posting two aces. Kira Fallert led the Panthers with 10 digs. Inga Rotto and Carly Spies shared the team lead in blocking at three blocks apiece.
Set 1: The Panthers and the Redbirds battled to 13 ties in the opening stanza including a 12-12 score that was broken up by Carly Spies with back-to-back kills off of overpasses. Illinois State eventually answered with two big runs including a 4-0 spurt from a 20-19 deficit to come back for a 25-22 victory.
Set 2: UNI trailed early within the frame before building an 11-9 lead while rattling off four points in a row featuring a Jenna Brandt service ace and kills by Kira Fallert and Tayler Alden. However, the Redbirds once again rallied late and picked up a 25-21 win for a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Set 3: Other than a quick 1-1 tie, Illinois State led throughout the set. UNI did provide the contest's best run as Inga Rotto's kill highlighted a 5-0 stretch that trimmed the Panther deficit to 22-18. In the end, Illinois State held off UNI for a 25-19 triumph to earn the 3-0 sweep.
