Panthers Fall in Straight Sets Friday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – In the finale of a three-match homestand, the UNI Panther volleyball team was swept by the Drake Bulldogs, 3-0, Friday in the McLeod Center. Drake's set victories came by scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-13.
As a team, UNI registered 31 kills on a .140 attack percentage. The Panthers also collected three service aces within the match. Defensively, UNI tallied 31 digs and two blocks for the contest.
Emily Holterhaus had the best individual performance with a team-high 11 kills on .476 hitting with eight digs. Tayler Alden led UNI with 14 assists and two aces while fellow setter Jenna Brandt added 11 assists and one ace. Payton Ahrenstorff had eight digs in her first home start as a libero. Inga Rotto topped the Panthers with two blocks.
Set 1: Drake jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the match, but UNI rallied for an 11-11 tie on a kill from Emily Holterhaus. Olivia Tjernagel forced another tie at 12-12. However, the Bulldogs would pull in front for good and earned the 25-18 set win.
Set 2: The Panthers knotted up the Bulldogs quickly for ties of 2-2 and 3-3. Drake broke ahead and pushed its advantage to 21-15 late in the frame. UNI climbed within 22-21 before Drake posted a 3-0 closing run for a 25-21 victory.
Set 3: Emily Holterhaus scored three early kills that provided UNI with its first leads including a 6-5 edge. The Panthers later took a 9-7 lead on an Olivia Tjernagel termination. Drake answered with four consecutive points to begin a 17-3 spurt and finished off the sweep with a 25-13 triumph.

The Panthers have three matches on the road next week. UNI's next contest will be at Loyola at 6 pm Monday in Chicago. Later in the week, the Panthers will face Missouri State at 6 pm Friday and Southern Illinois at 5 pm Saturday.
