Gunnels Named MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS – UNI senior Bre Gunnels scored 33 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in two games as the Panthers swept Illinois State over the weekend. She earned Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for her efforts.
Friday, she matched her career-high with 18 points and also grabbed nine rebounds, going 7-for-10 from the field, while also recording a pair of blocks in the 82-71 win. She had a heads up play at the end of the third quarter when teammate Kam Finley launched a half-court shot and missed, but she gathered the rebound and made a runner at the buzzer to extend the Panther's lead.
Saturday, she went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line while scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead the Panthers to a 72-67 win. She also added two steals. She committed just four fouls in two games while carrying big defensive responsibilities.
It is the first POTW honor for the Panthers this season.
The Panthers are back in action Thursday on the road against Valparaiso at 6 p.m.
