CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – FloWrestling hosts its annual NCAA Awards Show Friday via its video platform and UNI wrestling is up for three honors.
The Panther Train's win over Oklahoma State in the McLeod Center is one of five finalists for Upset of the Year. Head coach Doug Schwab is one of five finalists for Coach of the Year. Taylor Lujan is a finalist for the Most Improved Award.
UNI won six bouts including a 13-2 major decision by Bryce Steiert over Joseph Smith at 174.
The dual was capped by a come-from-behind 5-2 win for Carter Isley at 285 to clinch the 19-15 victory.
Schwab was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year after compiling an 8-4 dual record and qualifying seven wrestlers for the NCAA Championship, matching his career-high.
Lujan and Bryce Steiert each earned Big 12 titles.
Lujan was set to enter the NCAA Championship with the No. 1 overall seed after finishing the year one a 19-bout win streak, including a Midlands Championship and his Big 12 title. He is a four-time NCAA Qualifier, but never made it out of the blood round in his previous three NCAA tournaments.
The Panthers accomplished all of this after losing 2019 National Champion Drew Foster to graduation and losing preseason Top-5 wrestler Jacob Holschlag to injury.
The show is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. CT on FloWrestling.org. Vans can vote for Upset of the Year Here and Coach of the Year Here.
