Four Panthers Advance to Semifinals at Big 12 Championship

TULSA, Okla. – Four UNI wrestlers advanced to the semifinals after the first session of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship Saturday at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
Top seeds Bryce Steiert and Taylor Lujan moved on to semis and were joined by Max Thomsen and Michael Blockhus.
Steiert led the way with a pin in his opening round match and an 8-0 major decision in his quarterfinal matchup. He will face Oklahoma State's Joseph Smith, the fifth-seed, in the semifinals.
Lujan grabbed a 10-5 win in his early match and survived a scare from eighth-seed Jacob Thompson from Air Force in the quarters, winning 11-10. He faces Iowa State's Marcus Coleman in the semifinals. No. 2 seed Anthony Montalvo fell in his quarterfinal match.
Thomsen received a bye to the quarterfinals at 149 and made quick work of Fresno State's Greg Gaxiola. He built a 9-0 lead before pinning Gaxiola in 2:34. He faces Henry Pohlmeyer from South Dakota State in the semifinals.
Michael Blockhus is in the semifinals after topping Wyoming's Trevor Jeffries in the first round before picking up a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals over Caleb Rea.
Austin Yant won his opener against Koy Wilkinson of Utah Valley before dropping his quarterfinal bout.
Jay Schwarm, Paden Moore and Isaiah Patton fell in their opening round bouts. Carter Isley fell in the quarterfinals 3-1 in a sudden victory decision.
As a team, the Panthers are fourth, but sit just four points out of third.
The evening session begins at 5 p.m.
