WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Kristin Pease was honored as UNI's Dale and Marilyn Howard Fan of the Year honoree at the 12th annual Coaches vs Cancer Gala at the Ron Pearson Center over the weekend.
Each year the four Iowa Division I head coaches (Drake, Iowa State, Iowa, UNI) celebrate the Dale and Marilyn Howard Fan of the Year honorees at the Coaches vs Cancer Gala. This year the Jacobsons were accompanied by Kristin Pease. Drake University was represented by head coach Darian DeVries and was accompanied by Dave Hansen, Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm was accompanied by Sparky Durow and Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery was accompanied by Kathy Howard.
Coach Jacobson and his wife Dawn have been active in the fight against cancer, supporting the Coaches vs Cancer initiative since 2007. In that time the Jacobson's have assisted the initiative in raising over 3.7 million dollars for the fight against cancer.
"UNI men's basketball, in so many ways, is very special to our family," said Pease. "I am extremely honored and excited to represent Ben and Dawn Jacobson and Northern Iowa basketball as their Dale and Marilyn Howard Fan of the Year."
Kristin was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, since then, the Cedar Falls school teacher has won her battle with cancer and has made a full recovery.
The Pease family is close with the UNI basketball team, teaching both of coach Jacobson's sons, Hunter and Tanner, while in elementary school and Kristin's husband, Patrick Pease, serves as the universities Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.
"Kristin is one of those people you just enjoy being around," said Jacobson. "She is always upbeat, positive and full of energy. Her cancer diagnosis has not taken any of these things from her daily life. She continues to impact her family, friends and students in a tremendous fashion while on the road to a full recovery. We want to thank Kristin for representing the Panthers as our Fan of the Year and for the courage she continues to display each and every day."
This year's Coaches vs Cancer Gala raised just over $300,000 for the fight against cancer.
