ST. LOUIS, Missouri – The UNI softball team landed two student-athletes on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.
After a great year on the field and in the classroom, the 2019 MVC Player of the Year Sammey Bunch adds another First Team Scholar-Athlete award to her resume, Bunch earned the same recognition as a sophomore. Bunch is a decorated shortstop for the Panthers, earning First Team All- MVC honors as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
Bunch has been consistent at the plate all year long, 62 hits on 157 at-bats with 50 RBIs and 17 home runs. Bunch broke the UNI single-season home run record with her home run against Valparaiso on March 13 and added her 17th in the MVC Tournament, securing the victory over #2 seed Southern Illinois in the semifinal game. Bunch has recorded multiple RBIs in 13 games this season and recorded a season-high 5 RBIs on March 14 against Valparaiso. Bunch is a Movement and Exercise Science major with a 3.57 cumulative GPA.
Adara Opiola earns her first Scholar-Athlete nod as a junior. Opiola was named an Honorable Mention Scholar-Athlete in 2019. Coming off a solid performance in the MVC Tournament, Opiola earns a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Opiola has played in 37 of the Panthers 51 games in 2019. Opiola is fifth on the team in RBIs (19), doubles (4), and home runs (5). Opiola recorded a .255 batting average and a .405 SLG percentage. Opiola has been a solid third baseman for the Panthers, recording 31 putouts and a .943 fielding percentage on the season. Opiola has a 3.87 cumulative grade point average while majoring in Political Science.
