PITTSBURGH, Pa. — All six Panthers from UNI wrestling stayed alive in the Division I National Wrestling Championships, while three wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals.
The Panthers rattled off four wins that included two sets of bonus points and three top-15 wins to end the first day at the national tournament.
The three quarterfinalists is the most for the Panther team since the 2014 national championships.
Complete list:
Bryce Steiert opened his day with a fall at 165 pounds and followed it up by knocking off No. 6 Logan Massa of Michigan. He will get his shot at avenging a 3-2 loss to No. 4 Josh Shields of Arizona State. Shields edged out Steiert 3-2 at Midlands this season to take third place, while Steiert finished fourth. Sheilds is an All-American who finished seventh at 157 pounds last year.
Steiert, a junior from Waverly, Iowa, is at his third national tournament looking for his first All-America honors.
Taylor Lujan helped boost the UNI team score with bonus points at 174 pounds. He notched a major decision before knocking off No. 8 Devin Skatzka (Minnesota), pinning him in 3 minutes, 22 seconds.
Lujan now faces top-seeded Mark Hall of Penn State. Hall handed Lujan his first loss at last year's NCAA championships, winning 6-2. Hall is a two-time NCAA finalist, taking second at last year's championships and winning the title two years ago.
Drew Foster opened with a major decision at 184 pounds and followed it up with a top-15 win over No. 12 Lou Deprez (Binghamton) in a 7-1 decision. He faces a familiar foe in Virginia Tech's No. 3 Zack Zavatsky in the quarterfinals. Foster leads the series with Zavatsky, 3-1. Zavatsky was sixth at last year's national tournament.
Foster, a senior, is a three-time NCAA qualifier looking to make the stand a second time. He was seventh at the 2017 championships.
Josh Alber and Max Thomsen both earned decisions in the first round at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively before being bumped to the consolations in the second round.
Alber has met 24 of the other 32 qualifiers at 141 pounds, but he has never wrestled tomorrow's opponent, No. 19 Jamel Morris of North Carolina State.
No. 2 seed Micah Jordan of Ohio State bumped Thomsen into the consolations. He battles Big 12 opponent No. 18 Christian Monserrat of West Virginia tomorrow. It will be the first meeting between the two.
Jay Schwarm was bumped to the backside of the 125-pound weight class in the first round after falling to No. 14 Michael McGee, the No. 12 seed from Old Dominion. It was just Schwarm's third loss by tech fall in his career. He returned to notch his 34th career fall to stay alive in the consolations.
Schwarm's weight class was reshuffled after an injury removed a top-15 seed. He faces his original opponent in the tournament, No. 12 Travis Piotrowski of Illinois. Piotrowski has beaten Schwarm twice by decision.
The team was sitting in ninth place.
