CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling head coach Doug Schwab was awarded the President's Award from the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.
Each year the president of the IWCOA honors an individual or individuals who have made an impact on the sport of wrestling either as a participant, coach or promoter of the sport.
The annual President's Award is one of the most prestigious awards given in Iowa for high school wrestling.
This year, IWCOA president Michael Doyle chose UNI wrestling coach Doug Schwab, Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands and Iowa State wrestling coach Kevin Dresser as the 2019 recipients.
The three honorees, all Iowa natives, have impacted wrestling as head coaches of the state's three Division I programs and as competitors at both the high school and collegiate levels.
Schwab, a native of Osage, won the 130-pound Class 2A state title in 1996, before becoming a three-time all-American and 1999 NCAA champion at 141 pounds at Iowa. He represented the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Dresser was a two-time state champion at Humboldt, where he compiled a 112-11-1 career record. He went on to wrestle at Iowa where he was the 1986 NCAA champion at 142 pounds.
Brands had a 109-12 high school record, winning a state title in 1986 for Sheldon, before becoming one of University of Iowa's all-time greats earning all-American honors and three national titles from 1989 to 1992, before winning the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta.
