Panther Men's Track Picked Second, Women Fourth in MVC Preseason Poll

ST. LOUIS – UNI men's track was picked second, and the Panther women were picked fourth in the preseason indoor track and field poll released Wednesday.
The Panthers return 2018 outdoor All-American Jacob Smith who redshirted last season outdoor season for UNI. He recorded the second-best 400-hurdle time in school history en route to his All-American finish.
Panther squad that returns three of four members of the conference champion 400-meter relay team. In the field events, UNI brings the Panther Indoor shot put record holder in Keegan Tritle and outdoor shot put national champion qualifier, Darius King. Cade Kirkpatrick also returns after taking silver in the long jump last season.
The Panthers were just two points behind Illinois State for the preseason favorite and gathered four first-place votes.
On the women's side, pentathlon silver medalist Brooke Lorenz, 60-meter hurdle bronze medalist Patrice Watson and Katie Nimrod return after leading UNI to a second-place finish in the distance medley relay.
UNI was picked fourth behind Illinois State who swept the poll. Indiana State and Southern Illinois tied for second in the poll and with 83 total points. UNI finished with 72.
The Panthers are just over a week away from the season-opening meet at the Jimmy Grant Invite hosted by the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
UNI will again host the Valley track and field championship, Feb. 29-March 1 at the UNI-Dome.
