
UNI Wrestling Opens at the Harold Nichols Open

UNI Wrestling Opens the 2019-20 season at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames Sunday. Twenty-Seven Panthers wrestle Sunday. Noah Glaser, Kyle Golhofer, Parker Keckeisen, Garrett Moll, Kaleb Olejniczak, Dayton Porsch and Lance Runyon will wrestle in the Freshmen/Sophomore Division.Â
• Jacob Holschlag, John McConkey, Keegan Moore and Austin Yant are not slated to wrestle this weekend.Â
• Returning All-American Bryce Steiert will open the season at 174, a move up from last year. NCAA Qualifier Taylor Lujan will also take a step up from 174 to 184 to open the season. NCAA Qualifier Jay Schwarm returns at 125 and returning NCAA Qualifier Max Thomsen returns at 149.Â
• Five Panther Wrestlers won titles at last year's Harold Nichols Open, including three returners. Michael Blockhus (149) and Tyrell Gordon (197) won the Freshman/Sophomore Division and Taylor Lujan picked up the title in the 174 Open Division. Carter Isley took second at 285 in the open division and Gable Fox finished second at 149 in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
• UNI is coming off its best finish under head coach Doug Schwab. The Panthers finished 13th at the NCAA Championship last season and Drew Foster won the first Individual championship since 2000.
• Three All-Americans return for the Panthers. Junior Jacob Holschlag of La Porte City, Iowa, was fifth at 197 pounds last year in 2018 but missed last season with an injury. Senior Max Thomsen, a La Porte City, Iowa, native, returns after taking fifth at 149 pounds in 2017. Senior Bryce Steiert earned an eighth-place finish last season.
• UNI brought in six freshmen to the fold. Kyle Gollhofer from Cartersville, Ga., Garrett Moll from Lodi, Wis., Kaleb Olejnicazk from Perry, Iowa, Dayton Porsch from Hoxie, Kan., Lance Runyon from Pleasant Hill, Iowa and Parker Keckeisen from Glendale, Wis.Â
• The Panthers open at home on Nov. 24 at West Gym against Nebraska. It is the first of six home duals this season. Season tickets are on sale now by logging on to unipanthers.com/tickets or by calling  (319) 273-5455.
