Panther Wrestling Hosts Nebraska in Ranked Matchup

UNI Wrestling hosts Nebraska to open the home dual season at West Gym. It is the second dual of the season after the Panthers fell to Northwestern on the road last Sunday in Chicago. Nebraska is 2-0 with wins over DII schools Nebraska-Kearney and Chadron State.Â
• Jacob Schwarm (125), Max Thomsen (149), Bryce Steiert (174), Taylor Lujan (184) and Jacob Holschlag (197) are all ranked in the top-10 in their weight classes in various polls. Michael Blockhus (141) and Carter Isley (285) are ranked in the top-32 in the Track Wrestling Poll. Isley cracked the top-25 in The Open Mat poll this week.Â
• Nebraska comes into West Gym with seven ranked wrestlers, including a trio of top-five wrestlers in No. 5 Isaiah White (165), No. 3 Mikey Labriola (174) and Taylor Venz (184) in the InterMat rankings. The Cornhuskers are ranked third in the NWCA Poll and head coach and former Panther head man Mark Manning is again at the helm in Lincoln.
• Max Thomsen is 4-0 on the season. He moved up to the No. 3 spot in the Intermat Wrestling Poll after capturing the 149 Harold Nichols title in impressive fashion and maintained the ranking after picking up a 4-3 win over Northwestern's Yahya Thomas.Â
• Michael Blockhus opened his dual career with an impressive 13-3 win over Northwestern's Jack Tolin. He is 3-0 on the year after picking up a first-place finish at the Harold Nichols Open.
• Bryce Steiert, Taylor Lujan and Carter Isley all picked up wins against Northwestern including major decision by Steiert and a pin by Lujan. Â
• UNI freshman Kyle Gollhofer (Fr./Soph - 125) and redshirt freshman Drew Bennett (open - 133) picked up tournament championships at the Grand View Open in Des Moines. Kaleb Olejniczak (Fr/Soph. - 149) and Kyle Biscoglia (Open – 125) finished second, and Parker Keckeisen (Open – 184) finished third in a strong team showing in Des Moines.Â
• Six Panthers earned individual titles at the Harold Nichols Open.Â
