Panthers Roll Past Upper Iowa 67-40 in Exhibition Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Three Panthers scored in double figures, and the UNI women's basketball team opened the season with a 67-40 exhibition win over Upper Iowa, Saturday.
As Panther fans have come to expect, the UNI women earned the win on the back of their defense.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair, but UNI held a one-point, 15-14 lead after the frame. The Panther defense stepped up in the second quarter when the Peacocks managed just six points on 3-14 shooting from the field.
The third quarter was much of the same on the defensive end with the Panthers holding Upper Iowa to eight points on 3-12 shooting from the field while the Panthers extended the lead to 58-28.
Upper Iowa rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring UNI 12-9, but it was too late for the comeback attempt, and the Panthers cruised to the 27-point win.
UNI was 20-56 (35.7%) from the field while holding UIU to 16-56 (28.6%) from the field.
The Panthers were aggressive, drawing 25 personal fouls which led to 30 free throw attempts on the game. UNI was 23-30 (76.7%) from the free-throw line.
Kristina Cavey and Kam Finley each scored a game-high 11 points Cavey added 10 rebounds for the double-double in here first game in a Panther uniform after transferring from Fresno State. Bre Gunnels also added 10 points and drew a game-high six fouls.
The game was an exhibition for both teams. UNI opens the season in earnest at home against North Dakota State on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

-Megan Maahs hit her first two buckets of the game to help UNI build a 6-2 lead. Maahs returned to the floor after missing most of last season with an injury.
-Graduate transfer Kristina Cavey came off the bench to score 11 points, going 7-8 from the free-throw line in her first UNI action.
-The Panthers held Upper Iowa to just six points on 3-14 shooting in the second quarter and eight points on 3-12 shooting in the third quarter.
-Every Panther on the roster scored in Sunday's exhibition.
