UNI Men's Basketball Falls to Salukis, 58-51

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI men's basketball team suffered its first loss in conference play on Saturday night, falling to the Salukis of Southern Illinois in the McLeod Center, 58-51.
The Panthers and Salukis historically have played each other very close, often winning or losing by single digits.
The Panthers struggled shooting the ball in the first half, going nine for 28 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Panthers recorded 11 offensive rebounds in the first half and recorded 11 second-chance points. As a team, the Panthers shot just 21 percent from beyond the arc in the first half but only trailed 26-24 at the break.
The Panthers opened the second half on fire, scoring eight unanswered points to take a six-point lead in the opening five minutes. The Panthers maintained the lead for more than 10 minutes, leading the Salukis by as much as five points. The Salukis made runs throughout the second half and reclaimed the lead with 8:14 remaining and never looked back.
AJ Green continued to be the go-to shooter for the Panthers, recording 16 shot attempts. The freshman guard led the Panthers with 16 points and a team-high four assists.
Trae Berhow recorded a double-double against the Salukis, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Luke McDonnell shot 3-5 from the field and knocked in a three for seven points.
Miles Wentzien finished with four points and hauled in 10 rebounds including a team-high six offensive boards.

The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Normal, Illinois. to take on the 8-7 Redbirds of Illinois State. The Redbirds are 1-1 in the MVC this season after falling to Valparaiso 58-56 and defeating Evansville 58-46. Tuesday's MVC matchup will tip off at 7 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN+.
