UNI Tennis Opens at Omaha

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—The UNI tennis team looks to start the 2019 season off strong, traveling to Omaha for a meet on Jan. 20 at 10 am.
The Panthers and Mavericks met in Omaha last season, with the Mavericks earning a 5-2 victory over UNI. Reghan Lynch defeated Savanna Crowell at the No. 2 singles spot. Harri Proudfoot, Kate Merrick, and Valentina Caro return from last year's squad who faced Omaha.
Morganne Borsh and Claudia Toledo also return for the Panthers squad.
New Faces
Daisy Phillips, Olivia Fain, and Davi Patterson join the Panthers squad this year, in addition to assistant coach Lane Luhring.
Luhring, who spent the last few seasons as an assistant coach at Wartburg, joins the team this year. Luhring is a native of the area, having grown up in Parkersburg, IA, played collegiality at Quincy in Illinois.
Fall Season Review
Freshmen Phillips and Fain captured second and third places at the MVC Individual Championships in the fall. Phillips went the distance in the Flight 6 championship match before falling to Estelle Vanthier of Illinois State. Fain defeated Brooke Smith of Missouri State to capture the third-place victory in the Flight 7 singles.
MVC Preseason Poll
The Panthers were picked to finish in sixth place, tied with Valparaiso. The Panthers were seeded in the No. 6 spot at last year's championships before defeating the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to advance to the finals. This was the first championship match appearance for the Panthers since 2009.
Stony Brook was selected as the preseason favorite as released by the conference on Thursday.
