CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI men's basketball staff will be participating in Suits and Sneakers Week Jan. 21-27 and will be selling long-sleeve T-shirts so Panther Nation can join the cause at the Jan. 26 game.
"We look forward to bringing back our Hope Always game in conjunction with Suits and Sneakers Week," stated head coach Ben Jacobson. "I want to thank the Borglum family for their support as we remember Joyce Borglum and others who have had such a positive impact on the lives of so many in our community. Let's turn the McLeod Center pink with our Hope Always shirts to raise awareness as we continue the fight against cancer."
The Hope Always T-shirts (dry fit material) can be purchased for $10 by contacting Derrik Netten at (319) 273-7609, by emailing dnett@uni.edu, or on twitter @CoachDNett. T-shirt orders are due at noon Friday, Jan. 18.
Coaches from high schools and collegiate programs across the country are participating in the week long initiative to spread awareness for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches teamed up with the American Cancer Society to form Coaches vs. Cancer more than 25 years ago. Since the beginning of Coaches vs. Cancer, the program has raised more than $115 million to support the American Cancer Society and help save lives.
The fight against cancer is working. From 1991-2016, the cancer death rate has decreased by 27 percent. That means 2.6 million deaths were avoided from 1991-2016. With more than 5,000 communities involved, the American Cancer Society is structured to fight all aspects of cancer.
Jacobson and the rest of the UNI's coaching staff will be participating in Suits and Sneakers week. Coach Jacobson will be wearing shoelaces from Lacey's Laces, a Vineyard Vines tie, and sneakers in the Panthers games against Southern Illinois on Jan. 23 and for the Panthers home game against Evansville on Jan. 26.
