FULL SCHEDULE
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's basketball opens the season at home against Delaware in the opening round of the Preseason Women's NIT. The game is the first on a challenging slate released by Head Coach Tanya Warren Tuesday.
The tough non-conference schedule features games against six teams that played in post-season tournaments, including three NCAA Tournament squads.
"Our goal is always to schedule the best teams that we can," Warren said. "If we don't win our tournament, we want to put ourselves in a position to get an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. That paid huge dividends for us two years ago so it is something that we will always do. It prepares us for a tough MVC schedule and gives us the best shot for an at-large bid."
The home opener features Delaware on Friday, Nov. 9 to open the Preseason WNIT. The Blue Hens played in the 2018 WNIT. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals of the 16-team field that includes teams from the SEC, Big 12, ACC, Big East and more.
"We are extremely excited. It is an honor to be a part of that tournament," Warren said. "It is the first time in the history of our program that we've played in the Preseason WNIT and it is special to open that tournament at home."
After the Preseason WNIT, the Panthers play host to Creighton on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The Jays squeaked out a double-overtime win over UNI early last season in Omaha before advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round.
The road schedule includes a trip to California on Thanksgiving week to play the Beach Invite where they meet Long Beach State and Boise State. BSU is the back-to-back reigning Mountain West Champions.
The schedule also includes trips to Iowa on Dec. 16 and Kansas State on Dec. 29. The Hawkeyes were upset by Creighton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season while Kansas State advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT.
The non-conference slate also includes home games against North Dakota (Dec. 4), Minnesota State- Mankato (Dec. 19) and University of Nebraska-Omaha (Dec. 21) and a road matchup with IUPUI, another WNIT team on Nov. 30.
The Missouri Valley Conference schedule begins with road games at Illinois State and Bradley on the first weekend of January before hosting Valparaiso, Loyola and Drake.
Last season, UNI won seven of the last eight games in the Valley schedule. With four of the final six games at home, UNI is poised to the same thing again.
"We look at the season as an opportunity to make progress and make sure that we are playing our basketball in conference play and hit our peak around conference tournament," Warren said. "We need to make sure that we continue to improve. I've always said that winning doesn't mean you did everything right and losing doesn't mean you did everything wrong. For us, it is about progression on both ends of the floor."
The Missouri Valley Conference Championship is scheduled for March 14-17 in the Quad Cities.
