NEWTON, Kansas - The University of Northern Iowa women's golf team put on a birdie barrage Tuesday in the final round to wrap up second place at the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference women's golf championship held at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

As the birdies piled up, the Panthers moved up the standings. UNI entered the final day in sixth place but surged to second. It ties for the highest finish for the Panthers in MVC history, UNI has finished second on five occasions - 1983, 1985, 1986, 2002 and 2018.

UNI's final team score of 901 was aided by an impressive final round of 285, the best of UNI head coach John Bermel's coaching era. Unfortunately, the historic final round was not enough to move past the title-winning Missouri State Bears.

Maddie Bertsch fired a final round of 3-under par, 69. She was one off of her career-low round of 68 that she fired earlier this season at the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 13. Bertsch's round today included four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole.

Hannah Bermel shot a career-low round of 2-under par, 70, aiding to the first top-10 finish of her career. Bermel also notched four birdies on the day, including birdies at holes No. 16 and No. 18 to close the round. Bermel posted a total of 10 birdies at the MVC Championship event to tie for the third-most in the field.

Paige Van Dyk closed out her Panther career with an even par-72. Van Dyk's round included five birdies and an eagle. However, her round was marred by a pair of double bogeys, including one on the par-4 18th hole.

Emily Snelling posted three birdies for a final round of 74, while Sarah McMichael ended up with three birdies and a 75 on Tuesday.
