CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI will face a former Mid-American Conference opponent in pool competition to open the Virginia Duals set for Friday and Saturday.

"This weekend will be a good event," said head coach Doug Schwab. "We are going to see a lot of good individuals. It's another opportunity for us to get some big-time duals in."

The 13-team dual tournament opens with round robin competition among 13 teams in four pools in the National College Division.

This will be the first time UNI has competed in the Virginia Duals since the 2000 season.
Â
UNI will open with Kent State 10 a.m. Friday followed by Chattanooga noon Friday in the Poquoson River Pool. Kent State is receiving votes in the NWCA poll.

TOURNAMENT BRACKETS
Each team will wrestle in pools of three to four teams. The winner of each pool on Friday will advance to the gold bracket to compete again Saturday. Each second-place team will compete in the silver bracket, while the teams that place third and fourth will move into the bronze bracket.Â
Teams in the bronze and silver brackets will compete one final match Friday and wrestle for a final bracket placing Saturday.

Pool winners will wrestle all gold bracket matches on Saturday, the final day of the tournament.

PAST MEETINGS
It will be the fourth time UNI and Kent State have met. UNI leads the series 3-1. UNI won the last meeting 31-16 at Kent State Jan. 29, 2017.The Panthers have not faced Chattanooga since Schwab has taken the helm at UNI. UNI leads 9-2 in that series that started in 1977. Chattanooga edged out UNI 16-15 at a dual on the road Feb. 6, 2010.

Thirty-one wrestlers ranked in Intermat's top-20 are expected to compete at the weekend duals. Seven All-Americans who placed at last year's national tournament are expected to compete.125 POUNDS

UNI is coming off a second-place finish at the Southern Scuffle. Seven Panthers earned a spot on the podium.Â
"I don't think we've wrestled anywhere near what we are capable of doing, and we've placed fourth and second in two of the best tournaments in the country" Schwab said. "So I think it tell you we have a pretty dang good team. Our guys know it, and I don't think we've clicked on all cylinders yet."
