DeBartolo Named MVC Co-Golfer of the Week

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After a stellar weekend on the links, Northern Iowa senior men's golfer Sam DeBartolo was named the Missouri Valley Conference Co-Men's Golfer of the Week by the league office on Thursday.

The honor for UNI men's golf is the first weekly MVC player award since Sept. 24, 2014 when Glenn Walls claimed the accolade. The senior Panther shares the MVC achievement with Bradley's Ethan Bruce, who also earned medalist honors over the weekend.

DeBartolo had a fantastic showing at the UNO Invitational last weekend, capturing medalist honors to lead the Panthers. DeBartolo shot an even-par round of 71 on Sept. 2 to win the title by five shots. The Johnston, Iowa native recorded four birdies in his final round. His three-round total of 209 bested North Dakota State's Andrew Israelson's three-round score of 214.

DeBartolo recorded an opening-round 68 and followed it up with a one-under score of 70 in the second round. The senior notched seven birdies in his first 36 holes.

As a team, UNI finished runner-up at the UNO Invitational, with North Dakota State hanging on for the title. The Bison shot a three-round total of 867, while the Panthers posted a score of 877. UNI's final round score of 283 was the best team score during last Saturday's action.

UP NEXT
DeBartolo and the Panthers return to action this weekend as UNI heads to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Gene Miranda Invite on Sept. 8-10.
