OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team posted its second straight shutout to begin the 2017 season with a 2-0 triumph over the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.
UNI (2-0 overall) has started a season with two straight victories for only the third time in school history. UNI also opened up the 2003 and 2012 seasons with a pair of victories. UNI has scored seven goals - the most the Panthers have scored through its first two games in any season - and has not allowed a goal from the opposition through 180 minutes of action. Omaha fell to 0-3 on the season.
"I thought UNO came out ready to play and once we settled in after 10 minutes, we got our confidence and carried a good part of the play," UNI head coach Bruce Erickson said.
Senior Sarah Brandt (Ankeny, Iowa) got the Panthers on the board first with a goal at the 33:55 mark of the first half. It marked the 10th career goal for Brandt as she became only the fourth UNI women's soccer player to score 10 or more goals in her career.
Junior Brynell Yount (Aurora, Colo.) added an insurance score a little more than five minutes into the second half to give UNI a 2-0 advantage. It was Yount's second goal this season and eighth in her career.
"Sarah scored a great goal and Brynell continues to come up big," Erickson said. "Good chances were created and we are pleased with the clean sheet and the win."
UNI goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger (Wichita, Kan.) did not allow a goal in her second straight start. Reichenberger is the first UNI Panther goalie to post two straight shutouts to begin a season. UNI had a pair of shutouts to begin the 2012 season, but goalies Erin Zaideman and Nicole Postel shared time in each of those shutouts. Reichenberger recorded two saves against the Mavericks on Friday.
The Panthers secured their second all-time win over Nebraska-Omaha and the first win since a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks in the 2000
UNI will look to match the program's best start to a season (3-0 - 2003) on Sunday when the Panthers travel to Vermillion, S.D., to take on the South Dakota Coyotes. The UNI-USD matchup will get underway at 2 p.m.
NOTES:
It marks only the second all-time win for UNI against Nebraska-Omaha. The first victory came in the 2000 season and was UNI's first triumph in its program's history. The Panthers posted a 3-1 win over the Mavericks on Sept. 10, 2000. UNI is 2-2-1 all-time vs. Nebraska-Omaha
