UNI Softball Beats Oklahoma State, 11-5

STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team (10-8) wrapped up the Mizuno Classic with a huge win against Oklahoma State (12-9) on Sunday.
The top of the second kicked off the scoring frenzy for the Panthers as they came out swinging. Sammey Bunch was on first base when Anna Varriano stepped up to the plate and hit a double down left field to bring home Bunch. Courtney Krodinger and Abby Downs both sac bunt to bring home Varriano and give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead.
With Brittney Roby and Macey Wolfe both on base in the top of the third, Buchanan hits a sac pop up to move both Panthers over. Spencer comes up to bat and singles to right field in order to bring home Roby and Wolfe. Bunch also singles to land on first base. Spencer gets caught stealing third but Bunch is successful in stealing second. Varriano swings for the fences and gets a home run and brings Bunch along with her to give the Panthers a 6-2 lead at the end of the top of the third.
Alyssa Buchanan came in for Spencer as pitcher to kick off the bottom of the third. OSU was able to score one run and bring the score to 6-3 with a UNI lead.
In the top of the fourth, Downs would be the only run for the Panthers after her home run to extend UNI's lead, 7-3. Bailey Lange would come in to relieve Buchanan in the bottom of the fourth and did not allow any runs for the Cowgirls.
OSU will make their third pitching change in the top of the fifth after the bases are loaded and Brittney Krodinger gets hit by a pitch which results in Bunch being walked home. That would be the only run for the Panthers in the top of the fifth and bring UNI's lead to 8-3.
Spencer would come back in to close out the game after Lange walked the first two Cowgirls in the bottom of the fifth. OSU would once again not score any runs in this inning.
Lange would lead off in the top of the sixth and get hit by the pitch to place her on first base. Spencer was able to get a hit, but was out at first base, which pushed Lange to second base. With Bunch at bat, Lange was able to get to scoring position on a wild pitch, and Bunch was ultimately walked. Varriano came in for a sac fly, after Bunch stole second, to bring Lange home. Olivia Brooks came in as pitch runner for Bunch and made her way home with the help of a single into center field by Courtney Krodinger.
Bottom of the sixth allowed only one run for the Cowgirls and still behind UNI, 10-4.
The seventh inning sealed the deal as there was one additional run from Brittney Krodinger and Spencer only allowed one run from OSU. The Panthers beat the Cowgirls 11-5.
The Panthers will be back on the road March 10-12 as they head to Louisville, Kentucky for the Louisville Tournament.
