Terre Haute, IN - The University of Northern Iowa softball team wrapped up a three game series against Indiana State on Sunday.
After a slow start for both the Panthers (15-13, 3-3 MVC) and the Sycamores (15-13, 2-4 MVC), Indiana State was able to take the series win.Â
Both teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Panthers got on the board.
Sammey Bunch led off the top of the fifth inning and was able to hit off a single into center field. Bailey Lange followed up and hit a home run straight back into center field bringing Bunch along and giving UNI a 2-0 lead.
For the next few innings, both teams went on a dry spell, as neither were able to score any runs.
In the top of the seventh, Bunch led off once again and hit a home run right back into center field. Lange followed up by hitting a double into left center. Tianna Drahn grounded out but was able to advance both Panthers one base.
Jaci Spencer came in as a pinch hitter for Alicia Crivaro and found the sweet spot. Spencer made contact with the ball and reached first due to an error by the Sycamores shortstop, which resulted in bringing in both Jenny Kohl and Olivia Brooks, who pinch ran for Lange and Varriano respectively.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers led the Sycamores 5-0, but quickly lost the lead.
With rain starting to come down and bases loaded for the Sycamores, Bailey Martin came up to the plate and was walked by UNI pitcher Bailey Lange. That walk resulted in Shaye Barton giving the Sycamores their first run of the game and the momentum they were looking for.
Bases were reloaded and Brooke Riemenschneid came in to pinch hit. That change allowed Riemenschneid to hit a single into left center and bring in two more Indiana State players to close UNI's lead to 5-3.
Erika Crissman was next at bat and brought in two more Sycamores, due to a single to the right side and advancing to second during the play, to tie up the game at 5-5.
It was a sac fly into left field by Mary Turrito that brought in Crissman from second base to end the game 6-5.
Next up for the Panthers, will be a battle against Iowa State in Ames on Wednesday March 29 at 4 p.mTeam Stats
