Â
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Max Thomsen and Drew Foster secured their first All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships today.
Â
"I knew the kind of competitor Max was when we got him," head coach Doug Schwab said of Thomsen. "I am not surprised that as a freshman he is in the semifinals of the national tournament. He's finding different ways to win. He's been a hammer on top."
Â
Thomsen was bumped to the consolations with a 4-2 loss to No. 3 Lavion Mayes of Missouri in the semifinals. He will face No. 4 Micah Jordan of Ohio State for a shot at third place Saturday. Â
Â
Foster earned his spot on the podium by knocking off No. 10 seed Michael Macchiavello of North Carolina State in a 3-1 decision.
Â
"It just comes down to grit," said Foster. "In our practice room, you get a lot of that with guys like Jacob Holschlag and Dylan Peters. Those guys are gritty dudes. I just feed off that. I am still undersized at 184 pounds. I am building up on my size. Changing to 84 is a big jump. I was just getting used to that (last year), and now I am used to that."
Â
With an 8-6 loss to No. 6 Myles Martin of Ohio State, he will face No. 9 Nathan Jackson of Indiana for seventh place. Â
Â
Four Panthers were bumped from the tournament. Bryce Steiert was a win away from the 165-pound podium with wins over Iowa's Joseph Gunther and Lehigh's Cole Walter. No. 9 Chandler Rogers of Oklahoma State ended his run.
Â
Two-time All-American Dylan Peters lost his first-round 125-pound match in the morning.
Â
"He's been the heart of our program," Schwab said of Peters. "He really helped put our program on the map. He's got nothing to hang his head about. He had an incredible career. He helped elevate our program. Some of our young guys believe, because of him."
Â
Josh Alber coasted to a 6-2 win over Central Michigan's Corey Keener before being edged out by Scott Delvecchio of Rutgers at 133 pounds.
Â
At 174 pounds, Taylor Lujan grabbed a win before losing to No. 16 Jadaen Bernstein of Navy, 14-6. It was just the second major decision and second set of bonus points Lujan gave up all year.
Â
The team was sitting in 17th place at the end of the night. The Panthers were 25th last year.
