Panthers Hit Off Season With A Win

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team started its season off right with an 8-0 win over Toledo on Friday afternoon in the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic.

The Panthers hit the ball well to start the first inning. With the first two batters out, Sammey Bunch started the 6-0 run in the first inning by hitting a single to right center field. Pitcher Alyssa Buchanan was the next up to bat who walked to first. Macey Wolfe came up to the plate and hit a line drive double out to right center as Bunch scored and Buchanan advanced to third. Up next was Bailey Lange who singled out to right center while Wolfe and Buchanan scored to bring it to 3-0 Panthers. Brittney Krodinger came up to the plate as the bases were loaded and smashed a double to left center and brining in three more runs.

In the second, Toledo switched out Kailey Minarchick for Heather Webb at pitcher. Bunch came to the plate and attacked the ball again for a double to left center. Wolfe brought Bunch in on a single to left field. The Panthers ended to inning with two left on base,

The defense held tight for the Panthers as they held Toledo to no runs and only two hits. Buchanan pitched a great game as pitched all six innings with only two hits and two walks. She had eight strikeouts against twenty at-bats. She had three innings where she faced three batters and sent them all back to the dugout.

The game ended on with a single by Brittney Roby out to right field that advanced Abby Downs to home from third. Just before Roby, Downs hit a near-home run double to left field and advanced to third on a bunt by Brittney Krodinger. That put the Panthers up 8-0 against Toledo, which is the eight-run after five innings rule.

Panthers play one more game Friday evening at 7:15 p.m. against Wisconsin. UNI will continue play on Saturday against Montana at 2:45 p.m. and South Dakota State at 9 p.m. They will close out the UNI-Dome Classic on Sunday against Nebraska Omaha at 2:45 p.m.
