CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling opens its 2018 season on the road with an open tournament for most of the team, and feature matches for the returning All-Americans.
Most of the Panthers will be competing at Iowa State's open tournament set to start 9 a.m. Saturday.
"We go to Cornell Nov. 17. This weekend certainly going to set our lineup for the upcoming duals," said head coach Doug Schwab.
UNI returns to the mat with the most returning NCAA qualifiers since the 2009 season when seven returned.
UNI will be sending Max Thomsen and Drew Foster to the NWCA All-Star Classic. They are the first Panthers to compete at the featured event since 2004.
Thomsen of La Porte City, Iowa, will face sophomore Matt Kolodzik from Princeton. Kolodzik is the first freshman to earn All-America honors for Princeton. In 2017, he earned the No. 4 seed and finished seventh at 141 pounds at the Division I National Championships.
Thomsen, a sophomore, took fifth in the 149-pound weight class at the 2017 Division I National Championships.
Foster, a junior, was seventh at 184 pounds in the 2017 national tournament. He faces senior Pete Renda of North Carolina State.
Renda is a three-time NCAA qualifier and earned All-America honors in 2016. He redshirted last season after placing third at 184 pounds in 2016. He qualified as a true freshman and sophomore at 174 pounds.

Three wrestlers with Panther ties will be competing in the freestyle division at the Dave Schultz Memorial.Panther Wrestling Club member Joey Lazor will compete at 65K. Former Panthers Joe Colon and Blaize Cabell will compete at 61K and 97K, respectively.

UNI wrestling has planned a clinic from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 19 to help a toddler battling cancer.Wrestlers eighth grade and younger can learn from UNI coaches and former wrestling greats at the Panther Train Pins Cancer Clinic. All the proceeds benefit Evie Mae Mueller. Cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, meal and entry to the NDSU vs. UNI dual later that day.
