No. 13 UNI Wrestling Falls to No. 19 Cornell, 30-10

ITHACA, New York – UNI wrestling's Taylor Lujan knocked off his first top-10 opponent of the 2018 season in the Panthers' first dual of the year, but UNI fell to No. 19 Cornell, 30-10.

UNI starts the season 0-1, and Cornell improves to 1-0 overall.

Max Thomsen got UNI on the board with a 10-1 major decision at 149 pounds over Jonathan Furnas of Cornell. The returning All-American is ranked No. 3 by Trackwrestling and led the team in takedowns with Paden Moore, who each had three.

Moore's 8-2 decision keeps him perfect at 157 pounds. Moore is now 6-0 overall with the win over Cornell's Joey Galasso.

UNI's final win would come from No. 8 Lujan, who knocked off All-American No. 6 Brandon Womack. Womack took eighth at 165 pounds at the 2017 NCAA Division I Championships.

Cornell now leads 4-0 in the series that started in 1997.

The Panthers return home to host North Dakota State in the West Gym 2 p.m. Sunday.

CANCER CLINIC

UNI will open Sunday with a clinic to benefit a family who lost their daughter to cancer last week. Evie Mae Mueller died on her 4^th birthday. The wrestling clinic in West Gym is open to youths eighth grade and younger.

Check in starts at 11 a.m. The clinic will be from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For $25, youths will receive a T-shirt, a meal and entry to the dual meet against NDSU at 2 p.m. that day. Parents must purchase their tickets prior to the day of the clinic if they are attending the NDSU meet.

Walk-up registration is welcome. Some donors have sponsored spots for those unable to pay the fee. Email richardr@uni.edu to register.
