UNI to Take on No. 2 Seed SIU at MVC Tournament

The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team will head to Wichita, Kan., to take part in the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament beginning Friday.
The Panthers (4-16 overall, 1-6 MVC) will be the No. 7 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 2 seeded Southern Illinois (14-11, 6-1 MVC) in a quarterfinal match set for 2:30 p.m. at the Genesis Health Club. UNI has reached the MVC semifinals six times since the 2005 season (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015).
SIU scored a 7-0 victory over UNI when the squads met April 16 in Carbondale, Ill. The last time these two programs met in the MVC Tournament, UNI posted a 5-2 win over SIU in the 2009 MVC semifinals.
Sophomore Gisela Kemper has tallied a team-best 19 singles wins and is 9-3 at No. 4 singles. Kemper enters the MVC Tournament riding a three-match singles winning streak. Junior Astrid Santos and Kemper have combined to go 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and have won four of their last five matches entering Friday's play. Kemper and Santos registered a 6-3 win over SIU's Meagan Mohaghan and Vitoria Beirao when the teams met April 16.
Junior Elvira Lopez leads the squad in doubles wins this season with 19. Lopez has teamed up this spring with Jieke Stroobant and the Panther duo have gone 10-9 in dual action.
