CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Three Panthers grabbed top-15 seeds for the Division I Wrestling Championships set for next week.
In the first round, No. 9 Dylan Peters faces a familiar foe in MAC opponent Shakur Laney of Ohio. Peters beat Laney 9-5 at the MAC championships and pinned him earlier in the year. Peters qualified for the NCAA tournament with a second-place finish at 125 pounds at the MAC Championships.
Peters will be making his third trip to the NCAA tournament. He is the only returning All-American for UNI. He took sixth place at the 2014 championships.
Redshirt freshman Josh Alber earned an at-large spot and a No. 15 seed at 133 pounds. He faces Oklahoma State's Gary Wayne Harding. Sophomore Harding is a returning NCAA qualifier and took fourth at the Big 12 Tournament to earn an automatic bid this year.
Heavyweight Blaize Cabell earned the Panthers' final seed. He makes his third trip to the NCAA tournament as the No. 14 seed and faces Drexel's Joseph Goodhart. The sophomore was seventh at the EIWA Championships.
Cabell is on a 10-match win streak that dates back to Jan. 17. He won his first MAC title last weekend.
UNI will have two pigtail matches at 157 pounds and 165 pounds. Bryce Steiert will have a rematch with Ohio's Spartak Chino. Steiert won their first meeting this year in a 2-0 decision.
Cooper Moore will face Mitchell Wightman of American in the first round at 165 pounds. Wightman qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2014. Moore is a three-time national qualifier.
