UNI Drops Wrestling Dual to #19 KSU, 22-13

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Kent State extended its win streak to seven with a win against UNI wrestling Saturday night, 22-13.
UNI fell to 3-9 overall and 2-5 in the MAC. Kent State improved to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the MAC.
UNI got off to a very offensive start with Dylan Peters at 125 pounds. He notched three takedowns in the first period to lead 7-3 to start the second period. He racked up more than two minutes of riding time to go on to win a 15-6 major decision over Kent State's Del Vinas.
Kent State forfeited at 133 pounds to give UNI the 10-0 after two weights.
Tyler Willers stepped into the Panther lineup for the second time at 141 pounds. He grabbed an early takedown and nearfall points in the first period. The score was tied up 5-5 to start the third period, but Kent State's Anthony Tutolo edged out Willers with a riding time point to win 8-7.
No. 19 Bryce Steiert faced No. 2 Ian Miller for the second time this year. Miller won the first meeting 8-4. Steiert kept the match close, trailing just 2-1 at the end of the first period. Miller widened the gap to go up 6-3 to start the third. Miller went on to win 9-4.
Kent State would go on to win at 165 pounds and 174 pounds.
Drew Foster led 3-2 with more than 90 seconds of riding time to start the second. An early second- period escape by No. 28 Cole Baxter of KSU tied it back up 3-3 to start the third. Foster escaped early in the third to save 94 seconds of riding time, but a late takedown by Baxter sent the match into overtime. Baxter's takedown secured the sixth straight win for the Golden Flashes.
KSU got the first takedown at heavyweight, but Cabell started to come alive at the second half of the first period. He notched an escape and a takedown. He let Suglio loose with about 15 seconds left in the period to tie up the score 3-3. Cabell went on a scoring attack to win 9-6.
The decision wasn't enough to take the dual though. KSU won 22-13.

Gary Steffensmeier wrestled for UNI from 1988-92, earning All-America honors at 150 pounds in each of his final three seasons. He claimed his highest national finish as a sophomore in 1990 when he took second place at the NCAA Championships, and he followed up with fourth-place finishes in 1991 and 1992.
Steffensmeier concluded his career at UNI ranked No. 4 all-time in wins, holding a career record of 115-29-3. He was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team in 1991 and 1992.
As a senior in 1992, Steffensmeier became the first UNI wrestler to earn Academic All-America honors when he was named to the GTE Academic All-America third team.
