UNI Wrestling Edged Out By ISU, 18-16

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI dropped a dual to Iowa State 18-16 in front of a sold-out crowd in the West Gym Friday.
UNI fell to 3-8 overall, 2-4 in the MAC and Iowa State improved to 9-5, 1-2 in the Big 12.

UNI dropped the first match of the night, but No. 16 Blaize Cabell got the first win for UNI. With two takedowns in the first period, he led 4-1 to start the second. He kicked out quickly in the second period to go up 5-1. He went on to grab two more takedowns to win 9-4 over Marcus Harrington and tie up the team score 3-3.(2/5/2016) Wrestling Edged Out by ISU, 18-16
At 125 pounds, No. 7 Dylan Peters trailed 2-1 to start the second period. He got an escape early in the second to tie it back up. Another takedown extended the lead for Kyle Larson. Peters got an escape and then his first takedown of the match with 30 seconds left in the second period. He cut Larson loose quickly to make it 5-5 to start the third period.
Peters cut Larson early, but then went on the attack to get a takedown. Larson tied it back up with just more than a minute left at 7-7. He grabbed a final takedown with 43 seconds left in the match and kept Larson down to go on to win 9-7. The decision pushed the Panthers up 6-3 over the Cyclones.
With a fall at 133 pounds and decision at 141 pounds, the Cyclones surged ahead 12-6 at intermission.
After nearly two years off the mat due to injury, Adam Perrin made a strong comeback in his second match of the year. He grabbed a takedown and two quick nearfall points in the first. After an escape and another takedown, Perrin led 6-1 to start the second.
Perrin grabbed a takedown off the neutral start. They exchanged reversals, and Perrin grabbed an escape to lead 11-3 to start the third. A takedown and riding time in the third gave Perrin the 14-4 major decision.
Panthers continued to trail 12-10 until No. 19 Bryce Steiert's decision at 157 pounds put the Panthers up. He wasn't able to pin Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, but his nearfall points pushed him ahead 12-6.
UNI led 13-12 when No. 19 Cooper Moore took the mat at 165 pounds. Moore led 1-0 to start the third, but he cut No. 8 Tanner Weatherman loose to tie it up 1-1 to force overtime. Moore got the takedown after an officials review to go on to win 3-1 in sudden victory.
The win pushed UNI up 16-12 over ISU.
Kyle Lux trailed 3-1 to start the third at 174 pounds. An escape narrowed the gap, but a final takedown would seal the decision for No. 19 Lelund Weatherspoon. His riding time would push the score to 6-2.
Iowa State closed in 16-15 as it came down to the final match at 184 pounds. Iowa State grabbed the final match and team victory to win, 18-16.

In addition to recognizing its seniors, the wrestling team has named Gary Steffensmeier its honorary captain. Steffensmeier wrestled for UNI from 1988-92, earning All-America honors at 150 pounds in each of his final three seasons. He claimed his highest national finish as a sophomore in 1990 when he took second place at the NCAA Championships, and he followed up with fourth-place finishes in 1991 and 1992.
Steffensmeier concluded his career at UNI ranked No. 4 all-time in wins, holding a career record of 115-29-3. He was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team in 1991 and 1992. As a senior in 1992, Steffensmeier became the first UNI wrestler to earn Academic All-America honors when he was named to the GTE Academic All-America third team.
Tonight the Panthers made former UNI wrestling coach Don Briggs an honorary captain. When Briggs became the head wrestling coach in 1982, he had already been working at UNI for seven years. From 1974 through 1975, he was a graduate assistant. In 1975, after receiving his master's degree in physical education, he became UNI's first full-time varsity assistant wrestling coach.
In high school, Briggs wrestled at Jefferson High School in his hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He wrestled at the University of Iowa under head coach Dave McCuskey and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in physical education.
During his first year as UNI's head coach, he guided the Panthers to a 17-3 record, which included a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He was named National Rookie Coach of the Year. Briggs coached the Panthers to a 164-98 record, giving him the most Division I victories in UNI wrestling history. Briggs was named the NCAA West Regional Coach of the Year 10 times.
In 1987, Briggs led the Panthers to 18 victories, the most in school history for a single season. Briggs coached 51 All-Americans and 14 national champions. The Panthers dominated the West Regional after Briggs took over, placing second from 1983 through 1985, and winning it the following 12 seasons.
Briggs stepped down as head coach of the UNI wrestling team on June 30, 1997, to teach full time in the school's Department of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services.
