Nation's Top Wrestlers Expected at UNI Open

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A top-15 showdown at 165 pounds is possible at the UNI Open this weekend.
Teams with the top three wrestlers in the nation are slated to compete. Isaiah Martinez of Illinois holds the top spot at 165 pounds. Wisconsin's Isaac Jordan follows up at No. 2, and Daniel Lewis of Missouri rounds out the top three. UNI's Bryce Steiert entered the 165-pound rankings this week at No. 15. Steiert had been ranked at 157 pounds in recent weeks.
Fans are encouraged to bring toy donations for the Toys for Tots program. This program gives toys to families with children who are less fortunate. The southwest UNI-Dome doors will open at 8 a.m. for fans.
Sixteen Panthers medaled at last year's tournament. Twelve Panthers return on the competition roster for UNI this year. Max Thomsen placed the highest of the returners, finishing first at 149 pounds last year. Thomsen dominated, winning with two falls, two major decisions and a tech fall.
There are a lot of teams competing in this year's UNI Open. Eight top-25 teams come into Cedar Falls including five Big Ten teams like No. 3 Iowa, No. 7 Nebraska and No. 13 Illinois. No. 5 Missouri comes into the UNI Open winning the MAC conference the past four consecutive years.
