UNI Wrestling: Lujan Knocks off Top-10 Foe to Win UNI Open

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling's unranked Taylor Lujan knocked off No. 8 Zac Brunson of Illinois to help give the Panthers two champions at its own open tournament Saturday.
No. 12 Max Thomsen won his second consecutive UNI Open title at 149 pounds, and Lujan won at 174 pounds. It was the second open tournament title for both Panthers this year.
"There were some great instances of high-level wrestling," said head coach Doug Schwab. "Thinking back to Paden Moore and some of the attacks that he just hit. Some of our guys just have to believe a little bit more. You know? We can't believe for them. There comes a point where you have to know how good you are and pull the trigger and go do it."
Tyler Hoffman took second to bronze medalist, No. 1 J'Den Cox of Missouri at 197 pounds. No. 14 Drew Foster also placed second at 184 pounds.
Finishing third for UNI was Jacob Holschlag at 184 pounds. Heavyweight Carter Isley and Paden Moore at 157 pounds both took fourth.

The Panthers tallied 11 falls on the day.

UNI heads to No. 17 Wisconsin. Meet starts at noon Sunday.
"Wisconsin is a big meet next week," Schwab said. "And we really want to go into Christmas and the break on an upswing just as far as how we are competing. I think we are definitely on that swing right now. We need to close it out next week."
Wisconsin has three wrestlers ranked in FloWrestling's top-20: No. 2 Isaac Jordan at 165 pounds, No. 19 Ryan Christensen at 174 pounds and heavyweight No. 2 Connor Medbery.
Part of the team will head to St. Cloud State's Holiday Inn / Huskies Open Saturday.
