CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball squad picked up a 3-1 victory on Saturday over the Creighton Bluejays at the UNI Tournament held in the McLeod Center. The Panthers won by set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-8, 25-19.
UNI (2-3 overall) was led by junior Kayla Haneline and freshman Bri Weber. Haneline posted 13 kills and seven blocks, while Weber notched 13 kills and a career-high 22 digs. Creighton fell to 1-4 on the season.
UNI scored a 25-18 victory in the opening set that the Panthers closed on a 6-0 run. UNI committed only four attack errors in the set.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the second set. UNI took a 13-7 lead only to see Creighton trim the margin to three at 13-10. The Panthers opened the margin back up to five at 20-15. The Panthers hit a season-best .355 in the second set.
Creighton came storming back in the third set and cruised to a 25-8 win. Creighton committed one attack error, while UNI made 11 attack errors in the set.
UNI was able to close out the victory with a 25-19 fourth-set triumph. The Panthers limited the Bluejays to .064 hitting percentage in the fourth set. UNI led 13-7 before Creighton moved to within a point at 13-12. But Haneline provided a solo block on the next point to give UNI a 14-12 lead and Creighton would get no closer.
UNI will be back in action later tonight against the No. 8-ranked USC Trojans at 7:30 p.m. in the McLeod Center.Â
