UNI Snaps Cincy's Win Streak, 3-1

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball squad snapped the Cincinnati Bearcats's five-match win streak with a 3-1 triumph on Friday afternoon at the Butler All-American Classic at Hinkle Fieldhouse. UNI won by set scores of 16-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-17.
UNI (3-4 overall) dropped the opening set, but stormed back to take the match in four sets. UNI's Kayla Haneline tied a career-high with eight blocks and the Panthers posted a season-high 13 team blocks in the victory. Freshman Piper Thomas set a career-high with 13 kills and tied another with five blocks. Freshman Kendyl Sorge posted a career-high 19 digs. Freshman Bri Weber recorded her fourth double-double with 13 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Heather Hook scored a double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs.
The Panthers secured a season-high 13 blocks. It was the most blocks by the Panthers since tallying 13 blocks vs. Wichita State on Nov. 28, 2014.
Cincinnati (5-2 overall) posted a 25-16 victory in the opening set. The Bearcats were bolstered by a .353 hitting percentage, while UNI was limited to a .194 hitting percentage in the opening set.
UNI came out strong in the second set and built a 6-0 lead. Cincinnati fought back and eventually wiped out the Panther lead and the Bearcats took a 15-14 advantage. UNI was able to score a four-point run and turn a 17-17 deadlock into a 21-17 lead. Cincinnati would climb to within two points at 22-20 and 24-22, but the Panthers were able to close it out, 25-22. The Bearcats had eight kills and eight attack errors in the second set for a .000 hitting percentage.
The Panthers took a 2-1 lead following a 25-22 victory in the third set. UNI used a 5-0 run to take a 14-5 lead midway through the set.
UNI closed out the match with a 25-20 triumph in the fourth set. The set was tied 3-3 before UNI used a 6-1 run to take a 9-4 advantage.
UNI will be back in action tonight at 5 p.m. against the tournament host Butler Bulldogs.
