UNI Defeats Southern Illinois, 5-2

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team improved to 4-1 in Missouri Valley Conference action with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Southern Illinois Salukis on Sunday at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
UNI (14-5 overall) got back its winning ways in doubles by earning wins at No. 1 doubles from Erica Medlin and Elvira Lopez and No. 2 doubles from Jieke Stroobant and Astrid Santos. Stroobant and Santos improved to a team-best 8-2 in doubles play this season.
The Panthers took four of the six singles matches to secure the 5-2 team win. SIU fell to 13-9 overall and 2-3 in league dual matches.
Senior Erica Medlin led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over SIU's Natasha Tomishima. Medlin moved to 5-0 in MVC singles matches and 13-6 overall in singles play.
Sophomore Jieke Stroobant won her 14th consecutive singles match with a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over SIU's Athena Chrysanthou at No. 3 singles. Stroobant is 23-8 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in MVC dual play.
Sophomore Astrid Santos notched a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles over SIU's Yana Golovkina. Santos is 11-4 in singles dual play and 4-1 in MVC matches.
Freshman Gisela Kemper recorded her 20th win of the season with a 6-0, 7-6 win over SIU's Vitoria Beirao at No. 5 singles.
UNI will take on the Wichita State Shockers next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
