UNI Rallies in Singles to Defeat Evansville, 5-2

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team earned a trio of three-set singles wins en route to a 5-2 dual victory over the Evansville Purple Aces at Byrnes Park on Saturday.
UNI (13-5 overall, 3-1 MVC) lost the doubles point to begin the match vs. Evansville (9-8 overall, 1-3 MVC). The Purple Aces won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to take a 1-0 dual lead.
The Purple Aces appeared in control of the singles as well by taking the first set in four of the six singles matches. But the Panthers refused to give in and rallied to win three of the singles matches in a third set.
The first three-setter to finish on Saturday came at No. 4 singles where UNI's Astrid Santos scored a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Evansville's Marina Moreno.
UNI's No. 1 Erica Medlin dropped a first-set tiebraker to Marketa Trousilova, 7-6. Medlin knotted the match at a set apiece with a 6-1 triumph in the second set. Medlin rallied again in the third set. She was facing a 4-1 deficit but won the final five games to take the match, 6-4. Medlin's victory clinched the UNI dual win.
The final match of the day came down to No. 3 singles where UNI's Jieke Stroobant came from a set down against UE's Kennedy Craig. Stroobant fell in the opening set, 7-6. Stroobant was able to extend her singles win streak to 13 in a row by taking the final two sets by the count of 6-4, 6-5. The third set tiebraker was contested at 5-5 following an agreement between both head coaches. Stroobant's win also improved her to a team-best 16-2 at No.3 singles.
UNI will be back in action on Sunday at 10 a.m. against the Southern Illinois Salukis. The match is slated to take place at Byrnes Park (weather pending).
