WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team saw its 17-match home-court winning streak come to an end today as the Drake Bulldogs posted a 5-2 victory over the Panthers at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
UNI (10-5 overall, 0-1 MVC) was unable to gain a doubles victory as the Bulldogs scored wins in each of the three doubles matches. The doubles point came down to matches as No. 1 and No. 2 as the Bulldogs were able to capture the No. 3 doubles match by the count of 8-4.
UNI's No. 2 doubles pairing of Jieke Stroobant and Astrid Santos trailed 6-1 to Drake's Nell Boyd and Maddie Johnson. But the Panther duo knotted the score at 6-6 and looked to have momentum swaying toward the home team. However, Boyd and Johnson regrouped and scored wins in each of the final two games to take the 8-6 victory. The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for Stroobant and Santos at No. 2 doubles.
UNI's No. 1 doubles duo of Erica Medlin and Elvira Lopez had a late lead over Drake's Mariel Ante and Adrienne Jensen, only to see the Bulldog pairing rally for an 8-6 win as well.
The Panthers were able to pick up two wins in singles play as No. 1 Erica Medlin and No. 3 Jieke Stroobant each went the distance and picked up three-set victories.
Drake improved to 14-4 overall and 1-0 in league action.
UNI will be in action next week on the road with a pair of MVC matches. The Panthers will travel to Peoria, Ill., on Friday for a dual at noon against the Bradley Braves. UNI will continue on to Normal, Ill., on Saturday for a match against the Illinois State Redbirds at 1 p.m.
