Wichita State scored only its third sweep in Cedar Falls (2004 and 2008).
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Wichita State University Shockers posted a 3-0 sweep over the University of Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday night in the McLeod Center. Wichita State won by set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.
It marked only the third time in the series between the two schools that Wichita State scored a sweep in Cedar Falls. The Shockers tallied 3-0 wins in Cedar Falls in 2004 and 2008.
UNI (9-10 overall, 3-3 MVC) was led by Amie Held's third straight double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Bri Weber collected her team-leading 13th double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs. Freshman libero Kendyl Sorge tied a career-high with 19 digs. Kayla Haneline recorded 12 kills and a .450 hitting percentage.Â
Wichita State (13-6 overall, 4-1 MVC) was led by Shimen Fayad's 18 kills.
After dropping the first set, UNI looked to rally in the second set and even the match. The Panthers trailed 22-17 but reeled off six straight points to take a 23-22 lead. Following a timeout from WSU head coach Chris Lamb, the Shockers scored the final three points of the second stanza to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Panthers held a 17-14 lead in the third set, only to see the Shockers score three straight and tie the set at 17-17. The Shockers would gain a 23-22 late in the set and was able to score the final two points of the set following a Panther timeout.
UNI will be back in action Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Missouri State Bears. Saturday night mark a pink night in the McLeod Center and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match.
