AMES, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team kept Tuesday's contest with Iowa State scoreless for the majority of the contest in a 1-0 loss to the Cyclones. The Panthers (5-7-3) held ISU to five shots on goal while putting three on target themselves.
But both the Panthers and Cyclones had trouble putting shots on net in the first half as both teams finished with one shot on goal a piece. UNI was out-shot by ISU 11-4 in the first 45 minutes.
"We started off slowly and while things improved in terms of effort and intensity, we rarely showed enough quality to breakthrough," said UNI Head Coach James Price.
Katie Witt fired the first shot on goal for either team 20 minutes into the second half, but ISU keeper Lindsey Hendon kept the senior's shot out of the net. Witt finished with a team high three shots in the contest.
Whitney Blunt did her share in the net, tallying four saves to move her season total to 66, just 12 saves away from her career-best mark of 78.
Iowa State's Koree Willer broke the tie in the 74th minute, sending her shot past the outreached arms of Blunt and into the bottom left corner of the net.
The Panthers will return to Missouri Valley Conference play on Sunday when they face off against Indiana State on homecoming weekend. Kickoff in Waterloo is scheduled for 1 p.m.
