WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team lost their second home game of the season on Saturday evening, falling to Illinois State 2-0. The loss marked the first time this season that the Panthers (5-6-3, 1-2 MVC) were shut out at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
The Redbirds converted on their first shot of the game as Lauren Koehl got one past the UNI defense at the five minute mark of the opening half.
"I thought we did okay in the first half," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "The early goal was disappointing and I think when we look at it again we'll probably think we can do better."
UNI was the more aggressive team to open up the second half, getting multiple shots on goal in the first ten minutes. Annie Dale had arguably the best chance but pushed the shot just wide.
"We talked at halftime about going at them (ISU) a little bit more, changing our shape," said Price. "I was pleased with way we came out in the second half. If we score a goal it might have been a different game."
ISU countered the Panther attack with their second goal of the contest in the 59th minute. Kelli Zickert found the back of the net for the final goal of the game. The Redbirds outshot the Panthers 21-9 while putting 11 on target.
Whitney Blunt finished with nine saves on the evening while coming up big on a few ISU attempts in the second half.
The Panthers will take a break from Missouri Valley Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State. Kickoff between the Panthers and the Cyclones is scheduled for 7 p.m.
